There has been a continuing problem with diesel engine trucks emitting soot from their exhaust pipes and causing environmental pollution. In recent years, there has been significant effort and advancement by truck manufacturers and oil companies who are doing research to produce oil that will meet the ever-increasing standards to help reduce, or even eliminate, airborne contaminants in the environment.

What is Soot?

Generally speaking, soot is comprised of the impure particles of carbon that result from the incomplete combustion of a hydrocarbon. Formation of this contaminant depends largely on the composition of the fuel; therefore, manufacturers recommend the use of improved oil to help prolong the life span of the engine and to decrease oil change intervals.

It is very important to monitor and analyze oil contaminants to prevent premature oil degradation and failure of a truck's diesel motor. Although soot contamination is not considered a symptomatic contaminant, it can be a root cause of new motor failure occurrences. In other words, it is very capable of causing premature engine failures - or worse.

Presence in Engine

The presence of this contaminant in an engine is normal. It is expected, however, that the manufacturer's recommendations about mileage and service hours of the oil would be consulted. This would help in understanding that soot comes from the exhaust and when highly concentrated, it would be completely abnormal. This type of contamination may cause the following issues with a truck's engine:

The generation rate directly affects combustion efficiency. A high soot load can be caused from excessive ring clearance, restricted air filters and poor ignition timing. An oil change may not necessarily be the solution for this combustion problem. Deposits on the surfaces of motors that interfere with the efficiency of combustion as well as the economy of oil consumption. Rapid wear of rings and cylinder walls, which can be caused by buildup in the grooves behind piston rings. During cold start conditions, carbon jacking can severely damage the rings. If soot and sludge separates and is deposited on areas such as the valve covers, oil pans, and rocker boxes, this may risk the reliability of the motor. High viscosity and other corresponding problems during a cold start as well as the risk of oil starvation can be due to a high concentration level. Newly manufactured diesel engines are designed for lower emissions. This means that the injection pressure is higher which increases the sensitivity of abrasive wear caused by soot. Also, the amount of disturbing production is amplified with some of the new exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems.

This contamination can cause engine failure to develop over varying amounts of time. Usually, fuel/oil with moderate levels of contamination can cause sudden-death motor failure with its combination effect. While massive concentrations can cause sudden-death failures - and more problems - in this type of case, it can actually shorten the life span of the engine by almost 60%. This means that your motor's lifespan could be decreased from 750,000 miles to 300,000 miles of lifespan with controlled soot contamination.

The positive and negative side effects of a better filtering system in an engine have been an ongoing discussion among many manufacturers and oil companies. Oil filtering systems can help remove impurities from the lubricants even while allowing soot to mix with the oil which does not help in protecting the engine. Therefore, it is very important to monitor and analyze soot emission from a truck's engine in order to maintain a longer lifespan for that vehicle. Don't let soot damage your diesel engine!

This engine was used on super duty trucks till model year 2008 which ended in 2009. The previous 6.0 liter engines that were used prior to 2003 were totally unreliable. In fact, the company was said to have incurred huge losses due to them because many users opted for warranty repairs. There were many recalls also. So, the company resorted to a huge rectification process and the suitable modifications were effected from model year 2005, after which the reliability of these 6.0 L engines has been terrific. The design modifications done were excellent, thanks to the intensive training given to the technicians.

The 6.0 liter engine also faced the EGR valve carbon deposit issue. The problem was that the valves had to be replaced due to clogging of carbon in them and this used to happen during the powertrain warranty period. The company conducted serious research about this and found that extended idle times were responsible for the carbon buildup. The factor behind this was that the combustion efficiency of diesel engines at idle speeds was usually low. By updating the programming of the powertrain control module, the company could solve this issue.

Fuel injection services are growing in popularity for the following reasons in the order of motive.

Notice that "It's required" did not make the list. That's because fuel injection services are not required the majority of the time. In short, if your fuel efficiency is fine don't bother with a fuel injection service--Save Your Money!

What do they do?
Depending on the product, injection services clean naturally forming carbon deposits from the fuel injectors and fuel rails--some will even clean the fuel tank, and valve carbon deposits.

Do they work?
In short, yes. Provided it's a premium product (such as BG), and the service is performed correctly. Fuel injection services can do amazing things. They can improve fuel efficiency, increase horse power, and repair some performance concerns, although this last benefit is rare.

However, consistent use of cheap gas and poor adherence to an auto maintenance schedule, as well as certain driving styles can significantly increase the accumulation of carbon deposits. Thus the possibility of poor fuel efficiency, decreased horsepower, and performance issues increases--all of which could be helped by injector maintenance.

The other factor to consider is the expense. How much fuel savings justifies the cost of the fuel injection service, and how long is the pay off. BG claims that their product will pay for itself in a year's time. However, remember that the condition of the vehicle is a big variable!

How often should it be done?
It depends on the product, but generally between 15,000 to 30,000-miles is the average.

Can a fuel injection service do any damage to my engine or car?
Not if done correctly. Done incorrectly, anything goes. A technician could conceivably hydro-lock your engine, or blow a hole in the piston--although both scenarios are rare.

If anything does go wrong, there is usually an underlying problem, which gets exacerbated by the fuel injector auto maintenance.

Why doesn't my manufacturer recommend fuel injector cleaning auto maintenance?
No manufacturer recommends fuel injector cleaning auto maintenance under normal operating conditions. From a manufacturer's viewpoint: take care of your car right (i.e., as the manufacturer dictates) and you'll be fine.

However, depending on the problem, some manufacturers will recommend fuel injector cleaning auto maintenance as the cure--especially carbon knock. With the variety of fuel qualities available, manufacturers may reconsider fuel injector cleaning auto maintenance.

How much does fuel injector cleaning auto maintenance cost?
Prices vary depending on the service center and the actual procedure performed, and product used. The procedure you want should clean the entire fuel system including the tank and should not cost more than 0.

Finally, make sure the service is actually performed as fuel injector maintenance is a common scam across the industry.
